Horray, FreeBSD 10 is out and ready to serve as usual 🙂 . After getting iso file for i386 I quickly set Virtualbox using memory 512MB and space 20GB plus setting ethernet as Bridge. Fire up start button bring me to installation screen. Major release always excite me and I try to document installation process in case others need it.
Lets get start :
By default Virtualbox will set iso file as first boot device and I get this screen.
Let the default option or wait for autobot. Press Space to pause and choose other option.
Choose Install.
Let default keymap work for me as I don’t have special requirement for this case.
Press “Select”.
Set Hostname. Hostname is server name. I use “fbsd10.rasyid.net”.
Distribution Select. By default system will pick games and ports. I choose all.
Partitioning. I use Guided as I found it is simple to use. In case I want to build dedicated server then I will use Manual. For this case Guided is enough.
Use “Entire Disk” to let system use all available resource.
System will give summary. Hit Finish to let partition created.
Hit Commit.
Process partition will followed by copy all files. Just wait.
Enter password for root twice. Don’t worry, what you type is recorded by system.
Network configuration is special section for configure IP address. System will automatically detect the name of ethernet device. So can go wrong.
Use IPV4 as I only have it 🙂
Enter all information in the box. Use arrow to navigate between entry.
I use local cache in 192.168.1.1 plus using google public dns.
Clock setting. Choose “NO”.
I live in Asia so I choose it.
Indonesia is my country.
Sumatra is my place.
Boot service configured here. I used to use sshd and dumpdev.
Add user as usual and don’t forget to set group to ‘wheel’ in case you want to be able to access root using su.
Click Exit to apply configuration and exit installer.
Last confirmation before restart.
Click reboot. Don’t forget to remove CD / DVD or iso file to let hard disk take over 🙂
Complete. Till this section I have working FreeBSD 10 in my VirtualBox and ready to explore more.
